Floodplain Management Update

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has issued a new Flood Insurance Study (FIS) and Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) for Spokane County effective July 6, 2010. The new FIS replaced the 1980 edition. In order for the City to continue to participate in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) we were required to formally adopt the new documents into our Floodplain Management Ordinance by reference.

The FIS and FIRM are used to identify areas of special flood hazard, which are areas that have a 1% or greater chance of flooding any given year (previously known as the 100 year floodplain). Development within the areas of special flood hazard is regulated by the City of Spokane as required by FEMA. No changes have been made to the Floodplain Management standards that regulate the areas of special flood hazard.
